Augmented Reality Experience for The 5th Laneway Project

The Gold Award Winner of the 2021 Australia Street Art Awards : Best Street Art Laneway

The Mackay Laneway project was a creative initiative that started with a few local artists who wanted to give the 5th Lane in the Mackay City Centre a ‘make-over’, providing a once unloved space a new lease on life.

As the project grew so did the vision for what could be done in this space. The collaboration between art and technology grew from a meeting with the project manager Jodie Kearns (Connolly). The aim was to increase the foot traffic into the laneway and the city centre. With the use of Augmented Reality experiences I was able to provide a unique user interaction; one that would last beyond the intial launch night and that could also be changed over time so that visitors would have something to come back and see in the future.

Currently there are seven augmented pieces of art in the 5th Laneway that add another dimension to the art itself. Most of the animated Augmented Reality experiences were created in collaboration with the artists and with the final results being loved by many.

Below is some of the amazing artwork that was done by both local artists and guest artists that were brought in and offered some invaluable training and tips to the local artists.

Just a bunch of creatives with brushes, paint and a mission to colour-in large boring walls.

The video below showcases several of the Augmented Reality experiences, offering a virtual tour for those unable to visit Mackay in person. It also highlights some of the exceptional artwork featured in the laneway. This visual presentation allows viewers to appreciate both the innovative AR technology and the impressive artistic displays, even from afar.

3D Visualisation for Creative Instore Solutions - Sport Fridge

Concept Renders for Branded Sports Fridge.

This is the ultimate in Man Cave fridges. Holds a stack of beer, has a digital display to play all of your favourite moments and branding to satisfy the most die-hard of fans requirements. It even has built-in bottle openers!

My roll for this project was to produce a number of concept renders (these are just a few) to show the versatility of the Sports Fridge unit.

The shell of the fridge is essentially the same but with a change in colour and some well places graphics and/or collectables each fridge stands alone.

A few of the concepts were then taken through to a one of build to showcase them for specific brands.

Creative Instore Solutons

Lion, Dairy & Drinks division approached Creative Instore Solutions to develop an ionic off location display for the Dare product range.

My role again was to visualise different versions of the fridge to get client approval before it headed off to China for production.

The aim of the fridge design was to capture and keep the retail footprint through an engaging and iconic piece that included not only the ability to swap out graphics but also run a digital element (the LCD screen on the front) to deliver key brand messages and move with any promotional changes.

Here are a few of the options that were rendered and presented. Along with a few photos of the finished product.

The Dare fridge to the right went to production, had a run of a few hundred and were placed around the country in various locations, you may have seen one?

The Limited Edition Wally Lewis SportsFridgeTM, left, was featured on The Footy Show and had a limited run of 300.

It came with 2 Licenced NRL Jersey’s – 1 Queensland & 1 Australian autographed by King Wally.

2021 Good Design Award for the Pathology Frontline VR project commissioned by Werfen.

This was a fantastic project to work on. Werfen wanted a Virtual Reality training app to be deployed in hospitals so that Nurses and Technicians could easily go through training on the proper processors and procedures when using the GEM5000 blood analysis machine.

It was a great use case for a digital double of a real-world product. To be able to have a working digital copy of the device that can be used in a virtual space without any real-world implications, to be able to use it over and over again to perfect the correct technique and process it should be used is priceless. Not to mention the cost involved in supplying the number of physical machines needed to get everyone trained.

By using the CAD model and drawings as well as reference images and a few physical parts supplied by Werfen, I was able to create a very convincing digital double of the GEM5000 for the experience.

It needed to basically be a working digital version, opening and closing the cartridge door and inserting the cartridge. The paper roll on the top needed to be accessible to be able to go through to process of changing it when empty. The screen menu options were set up by the Devs and once that was done we had a working double.

We also needed to be able to see all the parts of the device and the exploded view of the cartridge since one chapter of the experience was to familiarise the user with all elements of the GEM5000. The main part of the experience takes place in the familiar surroundings of a mock-up hospital room.

2021 Good Design Awards Winner: Digital Design | Apps and Software

This virtual reality training for point-of-care-testing in the heathcare environment, is a world-first. It was designed to help healthcare professionals overcome limitations of time, training costs, travel, social distancing, and the availability of blood testing devices. Through partnership between TAFE NSW, Werfen, NSW Health Pathology and CognitiveVR it aims to solve a current healthcare industry problem.

Here are some progress renders of the GEM5000 and cartridge. A lot of the detail was added with normal maps that helped to keep the model low poly and still usable in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality or any game engine.

The red wireframe images show the topology of the models that were all done manually to ensure everything was optimised for the best high-poly (the CAD model) to low-poly bakings so as to keep as much detail as possible.

Some of the other elements that I created are in the gallery below. Small details that were either interactive and needed for the experience or just helped to bring the experience to life and helped it feel a little more like reality and a real-world environment.

3D Visualisation for Kaizen Engineering - Pipesafe Project

From an idea to reality, with the help of 3D.

I was asked by Kaizen Engineering to help them bring an idea to reality. Their newly conceived PipeSafe product was still in development and I needed to produce a number of 3D visualisation renders to show just what it looked like and how it worked.

Below are some images of how Kaizen Engineering used them on their website. Labelled with hotspots to highlight certain features and how they were able to integrate the 360 versions into the site. All before the product was even manufactured.

Below is a short video showing all of the products in their 360 spin sequence, showing the empty product and also a ghosted loaded version.

You can see here, on the right, that each version of the product was set up on the website to spin in 360 and show the loaded and unloaded states.

This showcases each of the products much better than a single image can.

Being able to clearly show the final product, either with realistic finishes or in the white outlined version before the product has been manufactured is priceless for a startup or new product line within a company. The sales team can start getting potential client feedback well before the first run has left the assembly line.

M&P Services came to me looking to strengthen their brand presence across print, signage, and promotional merchandise. Over the years they’ve built a strong reputation, and the goal was to match that with visuals and products that feel professional, cohesive, and unmistakably them. This project wasn’t just about making things look nice. It was about creating real tools they could use to connect with clients, staff, and event attendees.

What I Delivered

For M&P Services I developed a complete suite of branded assets, starting with a refreshed primary logo, a retro-style version for heritage appeal, and a special mark for their 40th anniversary. I designed capability statements that clearly communicate what they do and why they’re trusted. Pull-up banners were crafted to stand out at expos and job sites. And for the anniversary milestone, I produced a range of promotional merchandise, including stubby holders, key rings, caps, and lanyards, all consistent with the new visual identity.
